Project Overview

Kunafaday is a B2B wholesale e-commerce platform developed for restaurants, retailers, distributors, and commercial buyers. Unlike traditional retail e-commerce websites, Kunafaday focuses on wholesale purchasing where customers place bulk orders rather than individual consumer purchases.

The platform provides a streamlined ordering experience, product management, inventory visibility, customer account management, and business-focused purchasing workflows within a single Laravel application supported by jQuery and AJAX interactions.

Business Objective

Replace manual ordering channels — phone calls, messages, and spreadsheet quotations — with a self-serve B2B platform. Reduce order turnaround time, give commercial buyers transparent access to pricing and stock, and give the operations team structured control over products, categories, inventory, and orders.

Target Users

Restaurants & Cafés — placing recurring bulk orders for dessert and confectionery supplies.
Retailers & Distributors — sourcing stock for resale with wholesale pricing and repeat purchasing workflows.
Commercial Buyers — hospitality groups, caterers, and other businesses buying in volume for their own operations.
Operations & Admin Teams — managing catalogs, inventory, pricing, customer accounts, and order lifecycle through the admin panel.

Business Problem

The business operated primarily through manual sales channels: buyer enquiries came via phone, WhatsApp, and email, quotations were prepared on spreadsheets, and orders were transcribed manually before fulfillment. This created delays, pricing inconsistency, and weak visibility into inventory and customer history.

Core Pain Points

Manual quoting & ordering — every bulk purchase required a human touchpoint, slowing down buyers and limiting the volume of orders the team could process.
Weak catalog visibility — products, categories, and pricing were not available in a searchable online catalog for buyers to browse at their own pace.
Inventory & order drift — with no single source of truth, stock statuses and order states were often out of sync, causing backorders and fulfillment delays.
Missing admin workflow — the back office lacked a proper dashboard to manage products, categories, customers, carts, and checkout operations efficiently.

Desired Outcome

A maintainable Laravel-based B2B wholesale platform with a structured product catalog, bulk ordering, wholesale checkout, customer accounts, order management, and a dedicated admin dashboard — replacing the manual spreadsheet-heavy workflow with a reliable web application.

Challenges & Solutions

Efficient B2B Purchasing Workflow
Problem

B2B buyers expect a familiar but more powerful ordering flow compared to retail. The platform needed to support bulk line-item entry, quick catalog review, and a checkout experience that matched how commercial buyers actually place orders.

Solution

Designed a bulk-first purchasing flow with catalog-driven ordering, explicit line-item review, and buyer account context baked into checkout. Iterated the flows during UAT until the path from browse → cart → submit felt natural for wholesale customers.

Bulk Order Processing
Problem

Commercial orders can contain many line items, each with its own quantity, pricing, and stock state. Managing persistence, validation, and stock checks at that scale required careful handling to avoid inconsistent order state.

Solution

Structured order submission with server-side validation for every line, transactional writes where order integrity mattered, and explicit inventory checks so buyers and operations always had a consistent view of stock and totals.

DB Performance for Large Catalogs
Problem

Product and category pages join multiple tables, use filters, and are accessed frequently. Without attention, listing pages and catalog lookups would degrade as SKU count grew.

Solution

Added indexes on high-read columns, optimized queries with eager loading and only-fetch-what-is-needed patterns, and refined category and catalog lookups to keep the browsing experience performant as the catalog grows.

Responsive Shopping Experience
Problem

B2B buyers place orders from multiple device types and screen sizes — from desktop purchasing at the office to quick reorders on mobile. The UI had to be usable everywhere.

Solution

Built with Bootstrap responsive grids and refined component layout on tablet and mobile breakpoints — ensuring catalogs, cart, line-item review, and checkout forms remained usable with appropriate touch targets and navigation.

Improving Admin Workflow
Problem

Operations and catalog admins need quick paths through orders, products, categories, inventory, and customers. A scattershot admin layout would slow down daily work and introduce mistakes.

Solution

Organized the admin dashboard around the daily operations workflow — prominent order entry points, catalog maintenance grouped logically, and customer/order details reachable in few clicks with guided actions for frequent tasks.

Performance Optimization
Problem

Core B2B pages — category listings, product pages, cart, and checkout — are high-traffic pages that must feel fast even with larger product sets and order histories.

Solution

Profile-based query tuning, N+1 elimination via eager loading, selective loading on listing pages, and targeted asset simplification for the customer-facing flows. Combined, these keep catalog and ordering pages responsive across the experience.

Results & Impact

Kunafaday successfully delivered a scalable B2B wholesale e-commerce platform for its commercial buyers. The application replaced manual quote and spreadsheet-based ordering with a self-serve web platform that buyers and operations teams use on an ongoing basis.

The wholesale purchasing workflow is now implemented as a structured application flow — product catalog, categories, shopping cart, checkout, and customer accounts — with admin-side modules for order, inventory, and product management.

Architecturally, the codebase is organized into maintainable Laravel modules (routes, controllers, models, services, and Blade views), which supports ongoing feature additions and refinement without degrading the structure of the original implementation.

Engineering Outcomes
  • Successfully delivered a scalable B2B wholesale platform on Laravel
  • Improved purchasing workflow for business customers
  • Built a maintainable Laravel application with modular structure
  • Enhanced overall application performance for catalog and cart
  • Delivered responsive and user-friendly interfaces
  • Production deployment with handover documentation

Lessons Learned

01
Designing Scalable B2B Systems
B2B systems scale differently from retail: buyer accounts, bulk orders, pricing tiers, and admin operations each need their own bounded modules. Clear module boundaries early prevent tangled checkout, order, and inventory logic later.
02
Laravel Architecture & Services
Controllers must stay thin. Extracting pricing, order orchestration, and catalog logic into dedicated service classes keeps the app testable and makes new buyer/admin workflows additive rather than invasive.
03
Database Optimization
Index strategy and eager-loading discipline pay dividends for product-heavy B2B catalogs. Profiling real UAT scenarios is better than guessing — it surfaces the exact joins and access patterns that actually need tuning.
04
Secure Application Development
Authentication, authorization, input validation, and upload protection are not last-step tasks. Treating every customer and admin action as untrusted from day one produces a hardened platform and avoids late-cycle security rewrites.
05
Performance Optimization
Fix the data layer first — indexes, selective columns, and relationship cleanup. Frontend and cache tuning amplify those wins; they do not replace them. Measure before and after every round of optimization.
06
Responsive UI Development
Buyers use phones and tablets in warehouses, shops, and on the go. Validating ordering flows across breakpoints in UAT — not just in static mockups — exposes the real interaction and layout bugs that buyers will actually hit.
07
Business Workflow Implementation
Every application feature must map to a real business action. When implementation choices conflict with actual wholesale operations workflows, fidelity to the customer process beats feature symmetry every time.
